Preparing for the intake interview

What to expect during an on-site intake interview

When you arrive at the venue for your intake interview, please report to reception. A practitioner will come to meet you. During the intake interview, you will discuss your symptoms. Together, we will determine which treatment best suits your needs. You will also have the opportunity to ask the practitioner any questions you may have.

What (and who) should you bring along to the intake interview?

  • A valid form of ID (passport, ID card, driving licence or residence permit);
  • A list of any medication you are currently taking (available from your pharmacy);
  • We recommend bringing someone with you to the intake interview, such as a partner, family member or friend.

Can you bring someone with you to the intake interview?

As an intake interview can feel nerve-racking, we suggest bringing a partner, family member or friend along for support. At {{site name}}, we refer to this person as a close friend or relative (Dutch: naaste). A close friend or relative can offer valuable insight into how they experience your symptoms and support us in finding the best way to help you. Working together with your family or friends will also help you achieve your personal goals during treatment and will have a positive impact on your relationship with them. We can also ask how your close friend or relative is feeling and find out if there’s anything we can do to support them.

Which questionnaires do you need to complete before the intake interview?

Your practitioner would like to know whether the treatment is effective. For this reason, we regularly assess how you are experiencing it. Before your intake interview, you will be invited to complete a number of online questionnaires. After that, we will assess the effectiveness of your treatment every three months. We do this by sending  questionnaires to you by email. We will share the results with you.

What does smoke-free mental health care at NPI involve?

NPI is smoke-free for employees, clients, patients and visitors. Smoking is no longer permitted in and around any of our buildings. We do not require our clients to stop smoking at home. If you want to quit smoking, we can help you get extra support. During the intake interview, we will explore the options with you.

How can I prepare for the intake?

  • Think in advance about the questions you want to ask during the conversation.
  • Bring a valid form of identification (passport, ID card, or driver’s licence).

What questions can I expect during the intake?

During the intake, you’ll be asked questions to determine what kind of support you’re seeking. We aim to get a clear picture of your life, your psychological and physical symptoms, and how these may be connected. You will also discuss the questionnaires you completed beforehand. In addition, we talk about any previous or current treatments. If you have children, the intake clinician will ask whether they might also need support.

At NPI, we provide highly specialized care, which also means we conduct a lot of research. We want to understand what works well and what doesn’t, so we can continuously improve our care. Everyone is eligible to participate in research, regardless of your diagnosis or the treatment you’re starting. That’s why we always ask whether you’re willing to take part. We request your consent for this research so we can maintain the highest quality of care. Your decision has no impact on the treatment you receive or the quality of that treatment.

Do I need to inform my GP about my treatment at NPI?

No, you don’t have to. If you give us permission, we will inform your GP about the treatment you will be receiving at NPI.
